Get Grounded!
Stress, anxiety, fear, anger, and sometimes everyday life knocks us around a bit. Unfortunately, those things can make us feel unfocused and drain our performance and motivation.
Here’s a quick tip to get you back on track. All you need is you and your five senses! I’ve taught this technique to my clients and in my trainings. It works!
First, feel your feet planted to the ground and take a deep breath in through your nose and release it out. Do this as slowly as you can. Maybe count to 5 as you inhale and exhale.
Now let’s use your 5 Senses.
Sight- Look for 5 things. Call them out in your head or out loud.
Touch- Touch 4 things. Feel for texture and other characteristics. Close your eyes if you want as you do this. And continue to breathe.
Hear- Listen for 3 things. This might be a little harder but it can be done. Close your eyes and your hearing may become sharper. Call these things out in your head.
Smell- Smell 2 things. Again, this one might be a little harder but I know you can smell 2 things. I usually smell the lotion on my hands and maybe the coffee in my cup.
Taste- Taste 1 thing. Take a sip of water or eat something. As you do this one, close your eyes to capture the flavors slowly.
After you do this exercise, notice how you feel. Has your breathing slowed? Do you feel a little more focused? Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
I’ve attached a cheatsheet below for your reading pleasure.
